What is bioprophylaxis?

Proactive care with carefully selected products – personalised, transparent and tailored to your needs.

The short answer

The term ‘bioprophylaxis’ does not refer to a uniformly defined standard of dental treatment. In our practice, we use it to describe a form of professional preventive care in which, in addition to thorough cleaning, we pay particular attention to the selection and composition of the products used.

The aim remains the same: to remove plaque, clean hard-to-reach areas and provide effective support for your dental care at home.

What does ‘organic’ mean in the context of prophylaxis?

When it comes to food or cosmetics, the term ‘organic’ is often associated with specific certifications. In dentistry, however, there is no generally binding definition of ‘organic prophylaxis’.

That is why transparency is important to us. For us, organic prophylaxis does not mean replacing scientifically proven dentistry with supposedly natural alternatives. Rather, we combine the tried-and-tested elements of professional dental cleaning with a careful selection of the products we use.

Where possible, we take the following into account:

  • the composition of the products,
  • individual intolerances,
  • sensitive teeth and gums,
  • personal preferences and
  • your current state of health.

We do not decide which products are suitable for you on a one-size-fits-all basis, but following an individual assessment.

How does organic prophylaxis work?

The basic procedure is similar to a standard professional dental clean. However, the individual steps are tailored to the condition of your teeth and the products selected.

1. Personal assessment

To begin with, we examine your teeth and gums. Please let us know if you have any known allergies or intolerances, or if there are any specific ingredients you wish to avoid.

2. Removal of plaque

Hard and soft plaque are carefully removed – even from areas that are difficult to reach with a toothbrush and interdental cleaning in everyday life.

3. Cleaning and polishing

The surfaces of your teeth are cleaned and smoothed. The instruments and products used depend on your individual dental situation.

4. Personalised recommendations

Finally, you will receive advice on dental care at home. We take your existing habits into account and only recommend measures that suit your personal needs.

What distinguishes bio-prophylaxis from a standard dental clean?

The key difference lies not in the aim of the treatment, but in a more conscious consideration of the products used.

Bio-prophylaxis also focuses on the professional removal of plaque, the cleaning of hard-to-reach areas and personalised advice. In addition, greater attention is paid to which ingredients are used and whether they are suitable for the individual in question.

‘Organic’ does not automatically mean ‘better’ or ‘suitable for everyone’. What matters is that the preventive care is carried out in a medically sound manner and is tailored to the individual.

Who might find organic prophylaxis of interest?

This service may be of particular interest to people who:

  • place importance on carefully selected ingredients,
  • have sensitive teeth or gums,
  • do not tolerate certain products well,
  • wish to declare any known allergies, or
  • would like transparent advice on the materials used.

Even if you have no particular sensitivities, you may still be interested in this approach. During a face-to-face consultation, we will determine which form of prophylaxis is right for you.

Is organic prophylaxis always fluoride-free?

No. Organic prophylaxis and being fluoride-free are not automatically the same thing. Whether fluoride-containing products are appropriate should be assessed on the basis of your individual risk of tooth decay and your personal dental situation.

If you wish to avoid certain ingredients, please do let us know. We will explain the various options available to you and their significance in dental care.

Does bio-prophylaxis replace daily oral care?

No. Even a professional dental clean cannot replace regular oral hygiene at home.

The following remain crucial:

  • thorough toothbrushing,
  • cleaning between your teeth,
  • regular dental check-ups and
  • dental care tailored to your individual risk profile.

Professional prophylaxis complements these measures whilst also offering the opportunity to have your own oral care routine assessed.

How often is professional dental hygiene advisable?

There is no one-size-fits-all recommendation for this. The appropriate interval depends, amongst other things, on the condition of your teeth and gums, your personal oral hygiene, any dental implants you may have, and your individual risk of developing dental disease.

Following the examination, we will recommend a preventive care schedule that suits your dental situation.

How much does a bio-prophylaxis cost?

The cost depends on the individual effort required and the extent of the treatment. Statutory health insurance schemes do not generally cover professional teeth cleaning, although some schemes may voluntarily contribute towards the costs.

Before treatment, we will provide you with transparent information about the expected costs. You should also check with your health insurance provider to see if a subsidy is available.

Make informed choices, take professional preventative care

Bio-prophylaxis combines professional teeth cleaning with a conscious approach to the products used. The focus is not on a specific label or blanket promises, but on your personal dental health.

At our dental practice in Dresden, we provide clear advice on the options available and work with you to find the form of preventive care that suits you best.
